2017 AmaWaterways Mekong River Cruise, Asia, Thailand

Bangkok

To complete our exploration of the Indochinese Peninsula, we visited Bangkok, Thailand, prior to returning home. Shortly after our arrival we learned that the country was in mourning after the death of their king in October. Many people were wearing black, the official color of Thailand’s year-long mourning period.

Our hotel was a delightful surprise at an affordable price. The rooms were huge and well appointed; and we had access to the Executive Level Lounge, which included an elaborate breakfast, an open bar and a wide array of delicious heavy hors d’oeuvres in the evenings. Needless to say, we didn’t eat anywhere other than the hotel during our three-night stay.

Most of Bangkok’s major attractions can be accessed from the Chao Phraya River. We took advantage of the Skytrain and tourist river boats as our transportation around town. We limited our touring to the Chinese shopping district, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha at the massive Grand Palace and the National Museum, adjacent to Tammasat University.

Tomorrow we fly home by way of Hong Kong. Our fingers are crossed that our business class airline upgrades come through for the 12.5 hour transpacific flight.

Well you certainly saved one of the best for last!
The pictures of the temples and museum were astonishing, great job.
We definitely will be staying at the Eastin Grand if we get a chance to visit Bangkok.
    Welcome home.

Bangkok is really interesting. Bright colors and culturally imaginative temples. If this hotel doesn’t help cure Jill’s bronchitis – I don’t know what will. Your travels have inspired me to add Thailand to the bucket list. Thank you so much for your photo diary of events. Another exceptional production.
Let’s grab that Biz Class now!

Pete and Jill, I finally got the time to browse through the blog and I am overwhelmed by Pete’s gorgeous pics and Jill’s wonderful dialog. It’s a masterpiece.
Bravo and brava!!! As a direct participant and occasional subject, I can vouch that this journey (and I emphasize “journey”) was an incredible adventure, an eclectic mix of the exotic, the bizarre, the scary, the delicious, the beautiful, the luxurious, the stinky and the profoundly moving. Thanks you two for being our trek mates, for putting up with our moods and our foibles and for capturing these amazing memories in such a beautiful and indelible way. I will treasure them always.
