2016 Fall Color Road Trip, Canada, Quebec

Montreal

Greetings from Montreal.  It’s an island. We never knew that.  We landed safely and sped through customs & Alamo’s car rental process, even getting a free upgrade, a 2016 Nissan Altima.  We ditched the car at our hotel and then trekked on foot or by Uber during our stay. Parking & traffic are a challenge, here.  We learned that we cannot turn right on a red light on the island but can do so anywhere else in Quebec.  Go figure. While the economy seems to be flourishing in Canada, our currency is strong $0.76 US to $1.00 CDN, making it a good time to visit.

We could not have asked for better weather: blue skies and temperature in the upper 60’s during the day. We stayed in Vieux-Montreal, the old city.  It definitely has a European flair with its grey limestone exteriors, cobblestone streets, artwork and modernized gas lamps.  The people of Montreal are young, vibrant and impressively bilingual.

On the first day here, we visited the Governor’s House to ground ourselves in Montreal’s history.  Although New France was settled by French explorers / cartographers Jacques Cartier and Samuel de Champlain, it was soon overtaken by the English and later unsuccessfully invaded by the Americans, whom the French speaking residents felt were less classy than the Brits.  Quebec was ultimately unified as a bi-cultural province when the merchants of both French and English ethnicities started to make beaucoup bucks.  On a more current note, Montreal is in the world news again because its government is being criticized by animal lovers everywhere for discriminating against  a single breed of dog,  the pit bull.  A new law has been passed that requires all pit bulls to be muzzled and on a short leash.  All pit bull strays must be euthanized.  Ouch!

The first gallery contains pictures we took as we walked around old town during the day. Click on a picture below to see it enlarged with its description. To navigate the gallery, use the left and right arrows. Click the “X” in the upper right corner to exit the gallery view.

Old Montreal is magical at night.  It lights up like a Christmas tree.  This year is extra special because the town is preparing for its 375 year anniversary.  On many of the old walls and alley way floors, gigantic video projections of scenes from the history and heroes of Montreal are scattered throughout the city.  We downloaded an App and listened to the audio explaining each scene as we walked in the city.

The video below shows us walking through an alley that depicts the beginning of time.  It is a dreamlike recreation of the Algonquin creation myth.  The lights follow walkers venturing into this alley.

This projection was right outside our hotel window.  We were watching the presidential debate when Pete thought he saw a ghost through the curtains.  What he saw was a recreation of Montreal’s history, when the Sisters of Charity (the Grey Nuns) took in abandoned children and unwed mothers. Very cool indeed!

On our second day in Montreal, we decided to check out a different neighborhood in the western part of the city. We signed up for an ethnic food tour in a hipster area called Mile-End, located in the artistic hub of the Plateau neighborhood.  It is the area where Leonard Cohen lives and the group Arcade Fire hung out. We learned that residents in eastern Montreal primarily speak French, and people in western Montreal favor English.  The arty Mile-End area is like Silver Lake or the Arts District in LA, but much more multicultural: Hasidic Jews meet hipsters, meet Muslims, meet Chinese, meet Vietnamese, meet Italians.  Here we toured the world through food.

It’s a charming city, or am I influenced because my dad grew up there? Of course, after living in a ghetto in Latvia/Lithuania area, Montreal looked great.

I love all your pictures, and thanks for including me in your circle of good friends.

    Are you using your French?

    Enjoy your vacation.
    Hugs,

Yes, but I really do not need to in the touristy parts of Montreal. Most of the youth speak perfect English. Québécois is really different. Some expressions are new to me.

Had no idea that Montreal was an Island either. Great choice of tours, and oh so colorful!

Your photos and comments are stellar. That simple meal of a French salad and onion soup looked delicious – with a glass of wine of course.
Rick Steves is a fading memory – the two of you ARE the best tour experience! Is your French considered upscale by the natives? Any President we elect (based on the low down dirty campaigns) is going to be considered akin to an amoral homeless person by the rest of the world. The dignity of the Presidency is GONE! At least you escaped this drivel, plus you have great weather. I anxiously await your next installment so I can turn off CNN for awhile…….
    Good health and happy adventures!

Nice post and pictures guys. Montreal is #1 on my bucket list of cities to see in North America. The food tour sounds like a lot of fun! Cheers 🙂

My Grandpa(mother’s side) went to McGill University in Montreal around the turn of 20 century. He later went to Columbia and graduated in Law 1906. I got this information from my cousin after I visited Montreal 1998, otherwise I would visited McGill University. Maybe I could found out which year he was there. Thank you for sharing Montreal through your eyes and thoughts. The pictures and videos really added the depth of your trip. We are looking forward to your trip in the near future blog.

Great pics and videos! I love the lights tracking you down the alleyways and the “ghosts” on the walls. It’s kind of a mashup of old Paris and Disneyland. Now I feel that I have to see it myself.

What a really beautiful city! It looks like a place that I would very much enjoy living in. What makes it even more wonderful is the fact that my favorite singer/songwriter, Leonard Cohen, lives there!

I love your blogs with their great photos. I would never put as much time and effort as you do to entertain your friends. All they’d get is a postcard or two from me!

As you head ever more eastward, into eastern Quebec and Nova Scotia, you will be entering the former lands of the Acadians, the group that mostly wound-up down in Louisiana and became “Cajuns.” I mention this because, like the music of Leonard Cohen, I’ve always loved Cajun music!

Enjoy your trip, and I look forward to more of the adventures of you two kids!

P.S. Thank you for the birthday card!

Hello from Galax, Virginia. We are taking in a lot of Americana music, and today had a wonderful “linner” at Chateau Morrisette, a local winery seven miles off a secondary road. Last night we attended, for $5 each, the weekly live performance of four very talented country singers/musicians at the historic Rex Theater for local radio station WBRF. Several couples were “flat foot dancing,” and some of these folks have probably been married for at least sixty years. Wonderful. Today went to Floyd Country Store and watched a family group who sang and played on the hammered dulcimer, mandolin, banjo, bass, guitar and piano. Now…. We are in Trump Country but have actually seen a few Hillary and Bernie signs. Will miracles never cease!

Looks like you are having a great time as well. Be Safe.
