After 3200 miles in 2 rental cars, 2 ferries and 17 hotels, we arrived at our final accommodation in Manhattan, NYC, the last stop on our Fall Color Road Trip. The area just south of Central Park along 57th Street has been changing at an astonishing rate and has acquired the nickname “Billionaire’s Row.” As Pete was walking back to the hotel after dropping off our car at Alamo car rental at Columbus Circle, he ran into Bruce Willis on the sidewalk at 57th and Broadway.
7th Avenue, Broadway and Times Square
This gallery captures touristy NYC. We would have avoided this place if it weren’t for the special event that closed the street. Click on the video to see the fun.
Chelsea Market and the High Line
We have been in NYC 4 other times, so we decided to go places we have not gone before.
Brooklyn Food and Culture Tour
Brooklyn is undergoing a renaissance, so we checked it out by signing up for a food and culture tour. It felt good to have other people plan the outing and drive us around. Brooklyn has inherited the cool ethnic neighborhoods that Manhattan once had. The rising cost of real estate (rents) drove out most of the ethnic businesses. The same is beginning to happen now in trendy Brooklyn.
9-11 Memorial and West 57th Street
We owed it to ourselves to visit the 9-11 Memorial. The first time we visited the World Trade Center was one month to the day before 9-11. Our revisit was a touching experience. The weather was perfect providing a wonderful final evening in the Big Apple.

I’ve always wanted to visit New York City–although I’m sure that I’d never want to live there. It sure has everything a shopper or diner could want! I won’t ever be able to make it, though, so I’ll have to content myself with seeing it on the Law & Order series of TV shows.
Looks like a wonderful trip. Of all the places, which one was your favorite?
loved seeing the 911 memorial finished. When we visited the museum building was not completed. What a great job you both do, and you looked happy and healthy at the end. XXX
I loved the special photos of my old home town. The food looked fantastic also.
Is this the last stop on your trip?
WOW! Lot’s of memories from the ’70’s, the unbelievable new – at the time – U.N. subsidized apartment on 29th and 2nd Ave. It was a 1 bedroon , 1.5 bath for the princely sum of $400! Now I’m wondering whatever happened to Eduardo Vetere, the Italian attorney who worked for the U.N. – my roommate at the time. The deli to visit on the Lower East Side (near the Towers) was Katz’s – whatta sandwich! Nothing wrong with Carnegie either!
Both of you are uber energetic D.I.Y. tourists. This vignette was like getting Anthony Bourdaine and Rick Steves at their finest! if HBO or Netflix had any brains you would be under contract as of NOW. Isn’t it great we can visit the greatest “ant colony” in the world and come back home to relaxing cool Redondo Beach. The photos are terrific – give Hilton execs. my regards. Let’s see – will it be the pizza dream, the brisket dream, or the rum baba dream tonight. Yes – AFTER the walk………
What a fantastic ending to a memorable trip.
Have a safe journey home.
Cheers
Thank you for going to the 9/11 site. The last time I was there was 2 months after the buildings came down. It is wonderful to see how beautiful they have made it now. Thank you again for all your wonderful pictures, saw yesterday you made it home safe.
Love and Hugs, Nina
