Eastern Europe has been on our travel bucket list from its inception. Perhaps it has to do with a desire to gain better insight into our “roots.” Pete’s father immigrated from a rural area to the north of Transylvania known as the Duchy of Bukovina at the time of his birth. Bukovina was a constituent land of the Austrian Empire and a Cisleithanian crown land of Austria–Hungary. After WWI the area became part of greater Romania. Today the area is part of western Ukraine. During our visit to Brasov in Transylvania we came within 400 km of his birthplace. Jill’s mother family immigrated from Belarus. Traveling along the Danube river, east of Budapest, allowed us the opportunity visit several countries, Croatia, Bulgaria, Serbia, and Romania providing us a glimpse of life today in Eastern Europe.
Our cruise began in Budapest. We had visited this city during another cruise in 2013. The city continues to be a wonderful place to enjoy ….
